Take Control of Your Headshots: new video series

A new series of videos giving actors the tools, techniques, insights and tactics to take control of their next headshot session, before during & after the shoot.

Looking at vital factors in choosing a photographer, like Colour vs B&W

Looking at vital factors in choosing a photographer, like Colour vs B&W, Price, Session Length and Photo Quality

If I got a penny for every client who says, as they step over the threshold to the studio, “I don’t really like having my photo taken”, I’d probably be retired by now.

That’s a totally natural apprehension about the pretty unnatural experience of being photographed. It’s more odd to me, if people aren’t slightly nervous.

But more than that, I’ve  found this apprehension can translate into a passivity during the session:

In short, people often treat a shoot like a trip to the dentist – something to be endured while a skilled professional does his or her job – rather than a trip to the hairdresser – something to be enjoyed while a skilled professional will do his or her job, but with your input helping shape the shoot.

Giving actors control

In response, a few years ago, I started running ‘Take Control of Your Headshots’ Workshops for drama schools and events like Surviving Actors (you can watch a video of one here).

Now I’m turning the same material into a series of videos aiming to give actors the tools, techniques, insights and tactics to take control of their next headshot session, before during & after the shoot.

I’ll be covering everything from:

– Choosing a photographer, and what makes a good headshot…
– …to preparing for the shoot, making clothing/hair/makeup choices…
– …to briefing your photographer, and relaxing / posing in the session…
– …to selecting your photos and using your headshot portfolio online to subtly show different sides of your casting…

The series will also cover modern trends in the industry:

– How online casting is changing the headshot
– Colour vs B&W
– How the form of the headshot is changing
– And questions like; is natural light better than studio light?

So, whether you’re the veteran of many a shoot, or a student about to have your first, hopefully there will be something you can take from these videos to make even more of your next headshot session.
