‘People, Faces, Castings’: 15 minutes with actor Jason Eddy

He’d play a dead body in a moat to get on Game of Thrones, but his Grandma saw his acting potential early; recent client, experienced Bermudian-born actor Jason Eddy, shares some of his career highlights, lowlights and insights, to begin my new ‘People, Faces, Castings‘ series.

I trained at The American Musical & Dramatic Academy in New York, New York and then The Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.

How do you get work?

My main avenue to work is through my agent – Noel Gay. I’ve made my own work in the past by collaborating with friends who are directors/producers and that is very rewarding. I hope to do more of that in the future. Also, now that I have been in the industry for a while I am contacted directly by people I have worked with before or find out that I have been recommended to someone else by them, which is always great.

How long have you been acting?

As my Grandmother likes to say, “He’s been an actor his whole life!”, but professionally for 10 years now.

What job have you enjoyed the most?

I’ve been really lucky with the jobs I have been a part of, so without reeling off a long list, I will go with a recent one that stands out… Last year I played Orsino in a production of “Twelfth Night” for The Midsummer-Scene Festival in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

We performed every night in a medieval fort on a peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea. The setting was incredible, it was a really lovely cast and a fantastic production. We had the days free to explore Dubrovnik, which is absolutely beautiful. It was pretty idyllic.
[MW note: Jason has worked with Polka a number of times, and has extensive verse-speaking experience including Antony & Cleopatra at Shakespeare’s Globe, Sense & Sensibility at the Yvonne Arnaud as well as the Regional Tour, and Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Guildford Shakespeare Company. He can also be seen in contemporary feature Forgotten Man (2016).]

Tell me about your worst audition.

Ha! There have been quite a few! The one that springs to mind first was a casting for a ‘Runner’ in an advert. They saw us in groups. They asked us each about our running experience. Turned out I was in a group with a professional long distance runner, a professional sprinter who was in training for the Rio Olympics and a pole vaulter who had medalled at The Commonwealth Games. As if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, after the ident we had to go upstairs to the street and have a race!! It was a proper “Please let the ground swallow me” moment.

Dream role?

Oberon in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, Konstantin in “The Seagull”, Belize in “Angels in America”.  A Dothraki Horselord or Dornish Prince on Game of Thrones!!! But to be honest I would play a dead body in a moat on that show, I’m obsessed with it.

What’s been the hardest aspect of your career so far?

I don’t think anything can really prepare you for how tough it can be as an actor. I think the hardest aspect is still believing in yourself after knock backs and rejection.

What do you know now, that you’d tell a younger Jason as he left drama school? 

michael-wharley-headshots-Being a great actor is not enough. There are LOADS of amazingly talented actors who struggle to find work. Learn to navigate the business side of the industry. Figure out your casting now. Write letters, go to press nights, prepare more than you think you need to. Not getting the part doesn’t mean you are rubbish. Beware of jealousy and envy, they don’t offer you anything. No matter what, always believe in yourself – if you don’t no one else will.
